No doubt, if your reading this article then you have some interest in tabletop RPGs. And maybe you have or haven’t played some of the more well known games such as D&D or GURPs. In this article I will explain to you how I got into gaming, why I game, what you could gain from gaming, and finally an explanation of my own product.
I first picked up a copy of Dungeons and Dragons: The Players Handbook, when I was 14. It was the 3rd edition book, and was made by Wizards of the Coast. I can still remember that I stayed home sick from school the next day, because I was so interested in reading that book. Shameful, I know, but it was just the start of my love affair with gaming.
I had previously played Magic: The Gathering, so I had a small community of friends who I knew who played the game with me. The comic book shop was like my second home before the age of 18, and was a comfortable place where I could play games, relax, and be myself. Thus, it wasn’t hard for me to find a gaming group to play my first tabletop session. I was the DM, and I coordinated a 9 session campaign, though I will admit, it was probably a very bad session at that. But, I was just 15, and I was dealing with my father’s divorce from his second wife. It was a good escape, and science-fiction/fantasy/gaming is something that me and my father shared in common.
I continued to play with that group, my friends and I meeting at a park nearby my house. His father would bring a Tom Clancy book to read, overall good memories. However, within a year we had a falling out, simply because we didn’t go to the same school. The group broke up, and to this day, I still can’t remember my friends name. The tech bubble burst, and both my parents lost jobs in the IT field. I became more concerned with the pressing needs of life than gaming.
However, by the end of 11th grade, I had picked up another great group of friends who gamed. A friend of mine, Andrew, introduced me to his friend Brian. I can still remember that Brian was maybe a little bit embarrassed to ask if I played D&D, but Andrew had no qualms about it. I think Brian was surprised to find out I did. Needless to say, our group came together that summer, and continued through most of Senior Year. We picked up a friend or two along the way, and we gamed all the way through the first year of college, and half the second year. We still meet up every once in a while to game. I’m hoping we do so this Christmas.
Since that time, I’ve been enlisted in the Army, engaged to a beautiful woman, deployed to Iraq, lost the love of my life, unemployed for a period of time, arrested for associating with the wrong people, returned to school, and finally started my own business. My life has many ups and downs, and many factors to affect it, however, the love of games and gaming has remained. I think it always will, as its carried me through the worst of times, and the best. It’s given me friends that I will forever be able to call such. People who like me for me, not because of anything else.
So, if you are thinking about gaming, I would recommend you try it! If you have the time now, its a cheap and easy way to build friends and contacts, and to spend your time. You might as well do it, because you never know whats around the corner that will snatch your life away from you.
You should start by buying the basic assets to gaming, the rules books. Old 3.5 books may cost you $30 for an entire set, while a set of new books may cost you $100. But once you get into the hobby, you will find your library explodes in size! Other than that, all you really need are dice!
