Dungeons And Dragons Computer Games

Do you have any tips/ hints/ links for a newbie to D&D?
I’m going to try my hand at Dungeons and Dragons for the first time. I’ve played computer/ console RPG games before, so I’m a little familiar with the basic concept. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or useful information for a newbie.
Also why did you create your character as you did? (Meaning why that particular kind of character, profession and so forth.)
I’m going to assume since you said you’re going to try it, you’ve already had someone invite you to play. If not, well the other answerers gave you some good info on finding a game.
Some basic advice.
Don’t take conflict in the party too seriously. Some people really get off on playing obnoxious characters. Some like to treat any new members with suspicion or even hostility. Some just like a certain amount of tension in the party. If that happens (it doesn’t always), it’s probably got nothing to do with you, don’t take it personally.
Don’t play a jerk
Stuff that you can get away with when you know the group better might get you kicked out if you start out on the wrong foot. If you play a thief, find a reason why he isn’t a greedy bastard who will steal from the party members and lift every bit of loot in sight. Don’t make a practical joker or a bully or a sullen loner.
Be cautious.
Anything and everything can be a trap. Possibly a lethal one. If it looks too good to be true, it’s deadly. If it’s odd and out of place, it’s significant, and probably dangerous. Your GM may not follow that style, but any GM can and possibly will break out a killer trap at any time.
Pay attention
This one is a killer. If you’re not paying attention, not only might you miss important clues, but even in combat, you may end up wasting valuable time studying the situation that you should have known already
Look Up.
The most dangerous stuff in any dungeon almost always lurks on the ceiling.
Don’t argue with the DM
Not only is it bad form that slows down the game, but he holds your characters fragile life in his hands. And he’s the granter of XP and treasure.
Listen to the voice of experience
Assuming that you’re joining a group of established players, they can (and probably will) give you the best advice. They know (or should anyhow) what their DM tends to do. What are his favorite monster types, what he never uses, what sort of things he won’t allow. They also know the tactics of the game. Learn from them.
Characters:
I have played literally hundreds of characters over the years. Some were pretty forgettable, some might be remembered for years by people who weren’t even in the game. Don’t be afraid to try different types of characters. There are few things sadder than the guy who *always* plays the dwarven fighter or the gnome or whatever. Learn what you like and enjoy it, but keep experimenting. I’ve always been a big fan of clerics and a sucker for finesse type warriors, but I’ve played everything from Barbarians to Wizards.
My latest characters are a bugbear ranger and an eladrin warlord for the new 4th edition game. I made the ranger because I hadn’t had a chance to play a striker yet, and I’ve always liked two weapon fighters. The gm was allowing monster races, something you can’t always count on, so I decided to be different. I’ve never played any sort of a goblin in D&D, so this was an interesting change of pace. For the other game, I made a warlord because we didn’t have a leader and I already had one cleric in another game.
